What To Know Before Buying a Fitness Tracker for Swimming
You want a tracker to be used in the water; that means that you want it to be waterproof. The IP ratings tell you how waterproof a device is. The ratings are shown below:
- IPX0: no protection at all
- IPX1: some protection against dripping water
- IPX2: more protection from dripping water
- IPX3: protection from sprayed water
- IPX4: protection from splashed water
- IPX5: protection from projected water
- IPX6: protection from strong jets of water
- IPX7: protection from immersion (1 meter for 30 minutes)
- IPX8: better protection from immersion (defined by the manufacturer)
When it comes to swimming with a device, you need one which is at least IP6 or IPX7, and more commonly IPX8. Anything less than that and you will not be able to go into the water with your device.
Most waterproof swim trackers are also rated for atmospheric pressure. This will tell you how deep you can go with your fitness tracker. Before you purchase a device, think about the type of swimming that you want to do. Most durable swim trackers are rated at 5ATM which means you can dive down to 50m. This will be enough for most people’s needs, but if you need to do some deep sea diving, then you may want to look for higher ratings.
Depending on how you want to use your device, you may want to opt for one with a screen. If you want to track your laps when you are in the water or be able to manipulate the device, then a screen could be essential. The more you want to do, the bigger and brighter you are going to want the screen to be. If you only want your data after you have completed your swim, then a small and compact device with no screen will be fine.
If you are wearing a fitness tracker in the water, then you may want to think about how it looks out of the water. Are you going to wear it all of the time? Do you want something which doubles as a watch and you can keep on your wrist permanently? Many fitness trackers can be for multiple purposes, and we kept this in mind when selecting the best swimming trackers out there. The ones on our list do a great job while looking great too.
How serious a swimmer are you? There is no point in shelling out for an expensive device if you are not going to use all of the features. Swimming trackers vary from simple devices to powerful ones. The more you want to do under the water, the more powerful a tracker you will need.
When it comes to durable wearables, the cost is always going to be slightly more than non-durable items. There is a reason for this. Durable and rugged devices last longer and do not break down as easily. When we went looking for the best swimming trackers, we wanted something which would get the job done, stand the test of time, and be affordable. The trackers on our list do exactly that. You may have to spend a little more initially, but you are going to save yourself from spending later. You are going to save yourself from a lot of headaches too.
